Boy Scout Jamboree on the Air (JOTA), Saturday, October 16, 2010

"CQ Jamboree", was the call heard over the airwaves as members of the Kauai Amateur Radio Club assisted Troop 203 from Kekaha during the recent Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) event.  Scoutmaster Bud Bouche warmly welcomed the amateur radio operators who volunteered to share their Saturday afternoon with the scouts.

John, KH6JMM, and Bob, KH6AS, worked Echolink stations while Ed, KH6EZ, Randy, WH7ZI, and Tad, NH7YS, searched for HF contacts.

Even club president, Jane, NH7TZ, came by to photograph the action and to meet the scouts. The hams enjoyed the interaction and they all mentioned that it was well worth the drive, some coming all the way from Kapaa, to participate in the event.  Even the scouts and non-ham adults present took an interest in the activity.  Several of them stated that they would be signing up for the next amateur radio license exam, so they too could enjoy operating on the ham bands.

2010 marks the 100 year anniversary for Boy Scouts USA, and scoutmaster Bouche mentioned that operating for JOTA was an exciting tribute to scouting's milestone.  The amateurs are looking forward to participating again next year, and hope to include a VHF station and satellite operation into the array.

Student Science Show August 25 to 27, 2010

With mouths agape and eyes wide, the students listened with excitement as an amateur radio operator conversed with them over the air at the 2010 General Atomics Science Show and Exposition held at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall on August 25 to 27.   Fourth, sixth and eighth graders learned how ham radios played an important communication role in natural disasters such as Hurricane Iniki. The annual event is supported through sponsorship from local businesses and encourages elementary and middle school students to pursue studies in science and technology.

Volunteers from the Kauai Amateur Radio Club (KARC) manned one of the interactive displays at the event with equipment generously provided by Robert Anderson, KH6AS.  Anderson set up two battery powered stations to show the resiliency of amateur radio in situations where commercial power service is lost.  This emergency communications display generated a high level of interest with the students and many of them remarked that it was their favorite of those they saw that day.

Operators participating in the show included Elaine Albertson, AH6TA, Jerry Hill, KH6HU, Dick Olsen, KH6DO, Lionel Mederios, WH7JW, Randy Blake, WH7ZI, Michelle Blake, WH7XA, John Montalbano, KH6JMM, Jane Goldsmith, NH7TZ, Sandy Josue, WH7PV, David Bown, WH7SI, Tom Ellis, K4XV, Bob Anderson, KH6AS and Tad Miura, NH7YS.

KARC president, Jane Goldsmith, stated, " I enjoyed watching the students discover amateur radio. Even with cell phones, internet, etc, they were excited to talk to someone on the radio.  Many of them said their favorite subjects in school are math and science and I think that bodes well for their future.  We may have some future members of the Kauai ARC! "
